National news is the coverage of events that have nationwide implications or affect a large number of people. This type of journalism is distinct from local news, which focuses on stories relevant to a specific community or region such as crime reports and human interest articles.
Similarly, world news is the news media jargon for any information about a country or global subject. This information may be sent from a foreign correspondent, or, more often, from a news agency. A news agency prepares hard news and feature articles that are sold in bulk to multiple newspapers, radio and television broadcasters. In the past, such services were delivered via telegraphy, but now they are typically provided via electronic communication systems.
In the case of a foreign correspondent, the reporter is usually stationed full-time in a particular country or region. These reporters are known as foreign journalists or correspondents, and they usually receive their material from local officials, community leaders and the local news media as well as from events that they directly witness. When reporters working abroad don’t have a permanent contract with any one news source, they are called stringers. In such cases, the stringer may produce material for several different news organizations simultaneously.
