The front page of a newspaper contains the biggest news stories of the day. It usually has a big red masthead and eye-catching pictures. It also gives us clues about the newspaper’s attitude towards the news – tabloid newspapers tend to focus on celebrity gossip while more serious papers will place a greater emphasis on national and international politics. The front page also teases other stories inside the paper. For example, cricketers are likely to get a lot of front-page attention when they score five wickets or a century.
In 2014, three Jane Does alleged that their traffickers used Backpage’s adult services sections to post ads offering them for sex. They sued in federal court, alleging that Backpage violated their civil rights by facilitating sex trafficking. A federal judge ruled that Backpage’s actions fell within “traditional publisher functions” regarding third-party content and were shielded by CDA Section 230.
